Symbian^1
Has a wide range of features including a Web browser, email support, productivity and PIM applications, Web runtime for easy creation of Web applications, an EKA2 real-time microkernel, SMP support, SQLite integration, full multi-tasking & multi-threading, a rich middleware including location, multimedia and seamless multibearer communications framework, LBS & GPS support, remote management support, advanced audio/video capture and playback.
Symbian^2
The first open version of the Symbian platform. It extends Symbian^1 with a number of features, including home screen support for embedded widgets, flexible support for different form factors and input methods, and an improved location event framework.
Symbian^3
The second open version of the Symbian platform. It extends Symbian^2 in many ways, including graphics support for advanced layering and effects, full HDMI support for a great television playback experience and improving data performance - ideal for streaming high definition audio and video.
Symbian^4
Symbian^4 is expected in 2010. It will feature Direct UI - a complete makeover of the touch UI, Qt as the primary runtime and the majority of SHAI in place, making hardware adaptation easier than ever before.
