Open Software: The Building blocks for a Converged Mobile Experience
Open software is the basic building block for a converged mobile experience. By 2010 we expect four billion people to have joined the global mobile conversation. For many of these people, their mobile device will host their first Internet experience, a far cry from being just a music player or phone. With this in mind, industry leaders have come together to establish the Symbian Foundation. The aim? To bring to life a shared vision to create the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform - and to make it available for free.
Background: How We Got Here
The intent to form the Symbian Foundation was announced on June 24, 2008, and continues to grow building industry support. The foundation began operating during the first half of 2009. Want to join in the fun? Foundation membership is open to all organizations.
The Symbian Foundation platform will be available to members under a royalty-free license from this non-profit foundation. The Symbian Foundation will provide, manage and unify the platform for its members. Also, it will commit to moving the platform to open source by 2010, under the Eclipse Public License. This will make the platform code available to all for free, bringing additional innovation to the platform and engaging even a broader community in future developments.
